Recently, I became a homeowner for the first time. It’s a very exciting time for sure, but one thing I wasn’t excited about was the renovations that came with the new home. Renovations take a lot of work and time to complete, and this busy customer service season isn’t exactly the ideal time to begin. After removing what seemed like an endless array of popcorn ceilings and 80’s-style light fixtures, I realized how great it feels to leave your mark on something.
So what does this have to do with Optimal Resume? Well directly, renovations caused me to take some time off not long ago (I call it a “renovacation”). But indirectly, I learned that putting a custom mark on your work (in this case, your Optimal Resume website) can create a more meaningful experience for you and your visitors. I definitely feel more connected to my home after working on it, and the same can be said for Optimal Resume users. Seeing a career center’s mark helps job seekers relate to the material, whether it’s an announcement on the homepage or a custom example in the Education section. And we’ve discovered that websites with even minor customizations can have significantly higher usage rates than websites with no alterations.
But as we all know, there are a gazillion things to customize on your Optimal website, so the idea of updating just one piece can be daunting. Keep these tips in mind as you begin planning your website renovations:
- Remember that you can customize your settings at any time. The Admin System is available 24/7 for your customization needs. Many career centers will customize in phases to make the workload more manageable.
- Determine which features your job seekers use most, and customize those first. Do your users love sample resumes? Or maybe they’re more interested in Interview Prep? If you’re unsure where to start, a simple survey may give you an idea.
- Understand which items can and cannot be changed. It seems like a no-brainer, but given our extensive selection of customizations, this is easier said than done. Understanding the website’s many features will make it easier to form a plan of attack.
Over the coming weeks, we’ll even focus on a few popular customizations and show how they can benefit your career center. Ask your support rep for information on how to customize any part of your website. Chances are we even have a how-to guide to get you started.
